Black Bricks in Brooklyn
Inspired by Dawoud Bey photograph (1988-1990)
Captured my first black and white oil painting feels like a big accomplishment. It’s imperfect, messy, sad looking and expressive.
It embodies a moment in time that felt hard and beautiful. Heavy and sweet. Luther Vandross is one of my favorite artists of all time and was born in 1951 in New York, New York. In 1988 Luther released his 5th Studio Album “Any Love”. I imagine this figure knowing and listening to his music as I painted this. I visualize the soulful beats of Luther filling the air around her. The same way Kendrick is filling the atmosphere with the sounds of freedom. Breaking my niggas out the matrix.
